Meningitis is an infection of the membranes covering the brain and the spinal cord. The three main types of meningitis are viral meningitis, fungal meningitis, and bacterial meningitis.

Failure to Diagnose and Treat Meningitis

Bacterial meningitis has a rapid onset and must be treated quickly. In a matter of hours, untreated meningitis can result in permanent paralysis, blindness, brain damage, seizures, coma, or even death. Unlike viral meningitis, bacterial and fungal meningitis respond well to early treatment. Therefore, early and accurate diagnosis is critical to the long-term health of the patient.

Unfortunately, meningitis is commonly misdiagnosed in adults. Many medical practitioners believe meningitis is a disease that occurs only in children and overlook symptoms in adult patients.

Potential symptoms of meningitis include:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Vomiting or nausea with headache
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating
  • Seizures
  • Sleepiness or difficulty waking up
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Lack of interest in drinking and eating
  • Skin rash

It’s important to understand that both viral and bacterial meningitis have the same symptoms. More importantly, this condition is contagious. It can be spread by coughing, sneezing, and through close contact. Doctors must first perform a lumbar puncture (e.g. spinal tap) to draw fluid from the spinal area. This will be examined to determine if meningitis is present. Further tests may also be performed, including CT scans, MRIs, and blood tests.
