Unnecessary Surgery

Female doctor with surgical teamIn a properly functioning medical system, your doctor makes decisions based on your medical needs. Those decisions should not be influenced by outside factors like financial gain. Unfortunately, that’s not always how our medical system works.

Because a surgeon makes money by performing procedures, there are times when a doctor’s financial interests can influence a medical decision. For this reason, patients may undergo unnecessary surgeries. Even more suspect is when a doctor has an undisclosed ownership interest in a facility or an equipment manufacturer. These conflicts of interest can present a serious breach of ethics.

You may have received an unnecessary surgery.

All surgeries carry some degree of risk, including risk of infection and risk from undergoing anesthesia. However, if a surgeon tells a patient of an unnecessary medical need, fails to accurately inform the patient of the benefits and risks associated with the procedure, or fails to explain less risky surgical or non-surgical alternatives, it is a violation of medical ethics. It may constitute medical malpractice. Patients cannot give informed consent if they are not adequately informed.

Recently, significant media attention has surrounded specific unnecessary procedures such as angioplasties, heart surgeries (including heart catheterization, stent implants, and heart bypass surgery), CABG, cesarean sections, hysterectomies, and procedures for back pain.
