Heart Attack Misdiagnosis

A heart attack (or acute myocardial infarction, sometimes called M.I.) occurs when artery blockage stops or reduces the blood flow to a portion of the heart, damaging the heart muscle. Even though heart attacks are common medical emergencies, they are often misdiagnosed or completely overlooked.

Although most patients can recover with proper and timely medical treatment, a heart attack can lead to permanent disability or death if left untreated. By failing to diagnose a myocardial infarction, the physician significantly increases the odds of patient injury or death. If doctors and emergency room personnel do not remain vigilant, the signs and symptoms of a heart attack can be missed and the patient sent home undiagnosed and untreated.

Symptoms of Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction)

While a heart attack may cause sudden or intense symptoms, many patients feel only mild discomfort. Some common symptoms of heart attack include one or more of the following:

  • Sweating
  • Pain or discomfort in any other area of the upper body, including the shoulder, arm, or back
  • Shortness of breath or trouble breathing

Misdiagnosis of Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction)

Doctors and emergency room staff must be careful not to mistake heart attack symptoms for symptoms of other, less dangerous problems, including:

  • Esophagitis
  • Angina
  • Acid reflux
  • Gallstones
  • Anxiety
  • Heartburn
  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
